Wellspring New York follows the Wellspring Plan, an approach to fitness and weight loss based on decades of scientific research and clinical experience on the most effective weight loss methods for long-term healthy living.

Wellspring New York is not a fad diet or a magical pill. In fact, it is unlike any of the many weight loss solutions you may have tried in the past.

Unlike traditional weight loss camps, diet camps or fat camps, Wellspring New York has proven its effectiveness year-after-year. On average, campers lose over 4 pounds a week while at Wellspring New York and continue to lose weight upon returning home. This success has been presented at scientific conferences, published in journals and covered by numerous media organizations.

Fat Camp for Women

Diet Management: Wellspring New York participants become experts on how to shop for, prepare, select and enjoy a low-fat, low-density diet that is nutritious and delicious. Participants enjoy nutritious, delicious foods in the form of meals and snacks. This approach satisfies hunger and is the optimal diet to counteract the biological and environmental factors that contribute to weight gain. Participants learn to cook the same foods they eat at camp, to shop for these foods in grocery stores, to select these foods in college dining halls and cafeterias, and to order these foods in restaurants.

Activity Management: Wellspring New York participants focus on taking at least 10,000 steps each day (tracked on our pedometers). Starting off with the morning walk, participants learn that steps come from a range of activities and that movement is essential to weight loss and a healthy lifestyle. The exciting activities at Wellspring motivate participants to continue this progress at home.

Fat Camp for Girls

Lifestyle Change: An integral component of the Wellspring Plan is lifestyle or behavioral change. Wellspring employs master’s- and doctoral-level therapists trained in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help participants make these permanent lifestyle changes. These Behavioral Coaches (or BCs) are under the direct supervision of a licensed psychologist, are trained by nationally renowned weight control expert Dr. Daniel Kirschenbaum, a professor at Northwestern University Medical School, and work with each participant individually and in a group setting. Behavioral change sessions involve a combination of intensive training on core self-regulatory behaviors proven effective for successful long-term weight control, as well as CBT to reinforce this training. Wellspring participants work with BCs to improve stress management skills, enhance frustration tolerance, and work through the issues that might be contributing to the excess weight, such as emotional eating or resorting to food as an unhealthy coping mechanism for when participants are feeling anxious or stressed.

Family Involvement: Parents and families work with the Wellspring New York clinical team to learn the Wellspring Plan and form a solid plan for transitioning each young woman home to a supportive and successful environment.

Fat Camps for Women

Continuing Care: When Wellspring New York is over, weight loss continues. Participants continue to work with their BC from camp in a ONE YEAR continuing care program. Participants continue to self-monitor, set goals and communicate with their BC, continuing the work started at Wellspring New York.

Every facet of the Wellspring New York program – diet, activities, behavioral therapy, family involvement, and continued after care — is based on decades of experience and research on what works for initial and continuing weight loss and successful long-term weight control.
